Patients and Methods
We performed an institutional retrospective analysis of patients undergoing pulmonary resection for a solitary pulmonary nodule or a mass suspicious for cancer from January 1995 to December 2009. Patients who had a known diagnosis of a benign lesion before resection were excluded from the study. We identified 3,217 patients who underwent resection of a focal pulmonary lesion at our institution. Three hundred fifty of these patients (10.8%) were found to have a benign pathologic diagnosis and
Results
Surgical resection was performed in 3,217 patients with focal pulmonary lesions suggestive of lung cancer at our institution between 1995 and 2009. Three hundred fifty of these patients (10.8%) were found to have benign lesions on pathologic examination. There were no sex differences between the benign and malignant groups. The patients who had malignant disease were significantly older (p < 0.001). There was a significant difference in the smoking history of these 2 groups between 2003 and
Comment
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer mortality in men and women in the United States, and the overall 5-year survival in lung cancer is less than 15%. However if the lung cancer is found in stage 1, when it is small and has not spread, the 5-year survival rates are as high as 73% [5]. With renewed interest in lung cancer screening and the widespread use of CT, more patients are presenting to thoracic surgeons with small indeterminate pulmonary nodules. A literature review of lung
