Unfortunately, physicians often wait until the patient's symptoms are severe enough to significantly impair their activities of daily living. In many cases, this results in patients missing the window of opportunity for transplantation and contributes to unacceptable mortality rates of patients who are on the transplant list.78 A new allocation system for lungs has been accepted by the United Network for Organ Sharing/Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Thoracic Organ Transplantation Committee and is due to be enacted in early 2005.79
