Six patients, from the author's own practice or from the literature, whose asthma began during a period of mourning are described. Mourning was found to be particularly complicated in all of them. The intensity of grief seemed to be a key psychological factor contributing to the onset of the asthma. Sadness itself was not a universal factor in triggering the asthma.
