  • Data are presented as median (interquartile range). In the stable state there were significant differences in myeloperoxidase (MPO) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) between the two groups of patients. One of the 69 patients was no longer expectorating in the stable clinical state, one had withdrawn from follow-up after developing a pneumothorax, and 10 further sputum samples provided insufficient volume for biochemical analysis after centrifugation. The clinical characteristics of these 12 patients were no different from the patient groups as a whole
