The chemokine RANTES is an important chemoattractant which attracts monocytes, T cells, NK cells and eosinophils into sites of inflammation.Aim of the study was to investigate the frequency of -28C/G and -403G/A RANTES polymorphisms in children hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia. The study involved two groups of children. The first (group A) consisted of 60 children hospitalised with pneumonia, 37 boys, aged 5±0,44 years and the second (group B) consisted of 135 healthy children, 60 boys, aged 9,6±0,2 years with no history of respiratory infections. The genotypes of all subjects were determined with PCR-RFLP assay.View this table:Frequency of genotypes and alleles of RANTES –28 C/G and –403 G/A promoter polymorphismsAccording to the results, only the -28C/G RANTES promoter polymorphism is associated with community-acquired pneumonia in children. No association was found for the -403G/A polymorphism.
