The prevalence of use of tobacco products in childhood and adolescence is reported to be as high as 20% in Turkey. However, awareness of tobacco smoking and attitude towards intervention was reported to be low in different physician groups. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate pediatrician’s awareness of tobacco smoking in children and their attitude towards intervention.Member of the Turkish Pediatric Association(TPA) formed the study population of this crosssectional study. A questionnaire about sent out through the mail group. The questionnaire consisted of questions about knowledge of the pediatricians about tobacco smoking in children as well as their attitude towards assessment and treatment methods. The questionnire consisted of 40 questions; among the 5718 members of TPA, 259 (63%female) responded to the questionnaire. Majority of the respondents were pediatrics residents (51%). 17%stated that they received training on smoking cessation The frequency of asking their patients about tobacco smoking was reported as “always” by 3.4% and “never” by 6.3%. Main reasons of not questioning about smoking status were outpatient room limitations(81%), lack of experience and self-confidence(55%) and time constraints(31%).In conclusion, majority of the pediatricians do not ask, assess and advise about tobacco smoking to their patients due to environmental limitations and lack of self confidence and education. Considering the disease burden of the use of tobacco products, improvement of patient care environment as well as pediatrician education is needed.FootnotesCite this article as: European Respiratory Journal 2021; 58: Suppl. 65, PA2439.This abstract was presented at the 2021 ERS International Congress, in session “Prediction of exacerbations in patients with COPD”.This is an ERS International Congress abstract.
