Patients who were hospitalized in the chest diseases clinic receiving caregiver support between January 2019-2021 were included. The comorbidities and the caregiver burden of the patients were assessed using modified Charlson comorbidity index and Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview. The caregivers were classified as light-medium burden (group1,burden score≤40) and medium-heavy burden (group2,burden score>40). A total of 120 patients and 120 caregivers were included. Most of the caregivers were married, unemployed with poor educational status and low-intermediate income. The mean duration of care was 6,9±8,3 years. More than half of the caregivers had≥1 chronic diseases and the mean caregiver burden score was 35±12,9 points. When compared with group 1,the number of female caregivers were higher in group 2. There was a positive correlation between the Zarit caregiver burden score and female gender (r=0,298,p=0,001) and the number of chronic diseases of caregivers (r=0,243,p=0,007) and a negative correlation with the level of education (r=-0,188,p=0,040). Caregiver burden is related to the caregivers’ gender, educational level and number of chronic diseases rather than the patients’ clinical characteristics. Poorly educated female caregivers with more than one chronic diseases perceive higher caregiver burden.
