New approaches that avoid the deterioration during hospitalization are needed. Objective: To evaluate the effects of a NEMS program in muscle-wasted AECOPD patients. Methods: In this clinical trial, AECOPD patients with muscle-wasted were included and randomly divided into two intervention groups. Patients in the control group received the standard treatment and patients in the experimental group received a daily NEMS program added to the pharmacological treatment. Lower limb strength was evaluated by hand-held dynamometry, and Self-Perceived Health Status was evaluated by the EQ-5D questionnaire. Patients were evaluated at baseline and at hospital discharge. Results: Finally, 33 patients were included in this study. There were no differences between groups at baseline in age, BMI, disease severity, hospital stay, and main variables. At discharge, there were significant differences between groups in lower limb strength and Self-Perceived Health Status in favor of the experimental group. Conclusion: This study has evidenced the effectiveness of a NEMS program in muscle-wasted AECOPD patients.FootnotesCite this article as: European Respiratory Journal 2020; 56: Suppl. 64, 943.This abstract was presented at the 2020 ERS International Congress, in session “Respiratory viruses in the "pre COVID-19" era”.This is an ERS International Congress abstract.
