We are conducting an RCT with 6 months of supervised high-intensity interval training on spinning bikes with titration of inhaled asthma medicine based on self-reported asthma symptoms (ACQ).Objective: To evaluate safety in terms of asthma exacerbations. Methods: We included 92 participants with a mean age of 49 (SD 17), 58% were female. Sixty-seven (73%) had self-reported allergy. FeNO was <25ppb in 71% and ≥50ppb in 14%. B-eosinophilocyte was <0.15 in 40% and ≥0.30 in 23%. Patients were treated on GINA step 2-4. Mean BMI were 28 (SD 5).Fifteen (16%) patients had at least 1 exacerbation 12 months prior to inclusion requiring oral corticosteroid (OCS). Three (3%) of the 15 were hospitalised. During our study exacerbations were classified into 5 groups (table 1).Two-thirds were randomised for training, but the code has not yet been broken. Results: Currently, 78%, 65% and 45% of the participants has completed 2, 4 and 6 months of study, respectively.Five (7%) of the 72 have had a moderate exacerbation, 12 (17%) a mild-moderate exacerbation and 10 (14%) a mild exacerbation. Two patients have had 2 exacerbations on separate occasions. Conclusion: There have been no severe or life-threatening exacerbations, although minimum dosage of ICS was chosen at each visit.FootnotesCite this article as: European Respiratory Journal 2019; 54: Suppl. 63, PA3422.This is an ERS International Congress abstract.
