The purpose of the study was to investigate effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on functional exercise capacity and respiratory muscle strength in PCD.Method: Twenty-two PCD patients were included, and were randomly assigned to IMT (11 patients) and control (11 patients) groups. The IMT group underwent IMT using Power Breathe K5 Device three days per week for six weeks, and maintained airway clearance therapy (ACT) at home. The control group performed only home-based ACT for six weeks. Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) were evaluated using a mouth pressure device, and functional capacity was assessed using six minute walk test (6MWT), and peak inspiratory flow (PIF) was evaluated using Power Breathe K5 Device. Results: The MIP, %MIP, PIF, FVC, and 6MWT distance increased significantly after the IMT (p<0.05). However, MIP, %MIP, PIF, and 6MWT distance significantly decreased in the control group (p<0.05). The change in MIP, %MIP, MEP, PIF, FVC, and 6MWT distance were significantly higher after IMT as compared with those of control group (p<0.05).Conclusion: Inspiratory muscle endurance training has positive effects on functional capacity, respiratory muscle strength and pulmonary function in PCD. Its effects on quality of live and disease progression should be investigated. ER -
