We previously demonstrated that ES predicts the occurrence of acute lung injury in the pneumonic patients.Aims and objectives: To assess whether ES predicts the outcome of the patients with inflammatory lung diseases (IDs).Methods: We analyzed serum levels of ES in the 118 patients who were admitted to our hospital due to IDs including interstitial pneumonia (n=41), and lower respiratory tract infection (n=69), and pneumothorax, as non-inflammatory disease control (n=8), from January 2013 to December 2013, retrospectively. One hundred eleven patients were alive during hospital stay, and seven patents were died due to respiratory failure (n=7).Results: Subjects' mean age was 71.8 years (78 men and 40 women). Mean hospital stay was 18.8 days. ES levels in the IDs tended to be higher compared to control group (P =0.09). Among the patients with the IDs, circulating levels of ES were significantly higher in patients who were died than those who were alive (alive: 5241 ± 389 pg/mL, died: 11012 ± 1486 pg/mL, P <0.05).Conclusions: ES may be a predictive factor for outcome of patients with IDs.
