To investigate the pulmonary function in patients who ware HAM/TSP in the Amazon. From 2013 to 2015, 19 patients who were HAM/TSP definitive, 11 who were HAM/TSP probable and 13 without HAM/TSP participated in the study and underwent a spirometry test in compliance with the standards established by the Brazilian Consensus on Spirometry (Pereira,C.A.C.J.Pneumol.2002;3:1-82).This research was approved by Ethics Committee-Instituto Evandro Chagas (292251). 18.5%(8/43) of all of the patients had obstructive or restrictive lung disease, however none was without HAM/TSP (p=0.04). Pulmonary function values were also compared. The results suggest changes in lung function in those who have developed HAM/TSP. Thus, it seems reasonable to assume that such changes may be linked to possible lung inflammation.VariablesHTLV-1 women with HAM/TSPHTLV-1 women without HAM/TSPp-valueHTLV-1 men with HAM/TSPHTLV-1 men without HAM/TSPp-valueVC2.4±0.22.6±0.10.113.4±0.74.2±0.60.08FVC2.5±0.12.7±0.10.143.4±0.74.7±0.70.01*FEV12.0±0.12.3±0.10.03*2.8±0.53.8±0.50.01*FEV1/FVC78.8±8.984.2±4.50.03*81.0±7.879.7±5.30.76FEF25-751.9±0.72.7±0.70.01*2.7±0.83.6±0.70.09FET25-750.7±0.60.5±0.10.04*0.6±0.20.6±0.10.93FEFmax4.6±1.25.8±1.20.01*6.6±1.98.6±0.60.08FEF50%2.6±1.13.5±0.90.02*3.4±0.84.6±1.10.05*FEF75%0.8±0.31.1±0.30.061.2±0.81.4±0.40.61MVV71.5±14.385.6±15.20.02*97.2±20.0139.9±22.00.00*Data are expressed as mean ± standard deviation.
