The objective of this study was to explore preferences for end-of-life care in patients with advanced COPD.Methods: Patients with advanced COPD were visited at home to explore preferences for end-of-life care using the first level of the End-of-life Preferences Interview (ELPI).Results: 171 patients were included (mean age 67.7 (9.2) years; 53.2% male; FEV1 41.0 (18.5) % pred.). The majority of patients want to be involved in decision making and want to be informed about the disease process. Technical tools and opioids were acceptable if needed. Patients prefer physical care by a professional caregiver. Patients have diverse opinions about companionship in difficult moments. Conclusion: Patients with advanced COPD are able to discuss their preferences for end-of-life care. Knowing these preferences is important to improve patient empowerment at the end-of-life.The Advance Care Planning study is supported by Lung Foundation Netherlands.
