Typical plethysmography tools allow for measurements of chest wall motion but not alterations in geometry. Objective: to develop a model to study trunk geometry and motion non-invasively, using accelerometers and a 3-D motion capture system. Methods: 11 healthy subjects (25±4yrs, FEV1 95±15%pred) performed quiet breathing(QB), arm elevation(AE) and lateral bending(LB) with deep breath to the right and to the left. We assessed diameters and area changes at the xiphoid process and umbilical line using 3-D coordinates from 24 markers on the chest (Vicon®). Motion frequency and intensity in ribcage and abdomen were measured by 2 accelerometers (Delsys®). T-tests were used for comparisons. Results: Trunk geometry and motion differences were found between QB and AE but not between right and left bending [Table1].Conclusion: This new and flexible approach estimates different trunk geometric-motion measures with complementary-integral information to typical plethysmography tools. Future work will use this model to identify breathing alterations in respiratory or neuromuscular conditions.
