Pulmonary rehabilitation programs could be beneficial for elderly population. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of respiratory and callisthenic exercises on dyspnea, exercise capacity, quality of life in geriatrics.Methods: The study was carried out with 24 elderly participants who complain dyspnea and exercise intolerance. Subjects were randomised into either an exercise intervention (n:14, mean age:77.8±7.1years, BMI 27.4±3.6kg/m².), or a control group (n:10,mean age:78.9±9.7 years, BMI:30.3±3.0kg/m²). Exercise was included various respiratory and callisthenic exercises and performed 2 times a week, for 6 weeks. Control group was performed just assessments before and after 6 weeks. Outcome measurements were Six Minutes Walk Test (6MWT), Modified Borg Scale, Short Form-36 (SF-36).Results: 6MWT distance (p=0.00), SF-36 pain (p=0.03) and SF-36 physical function (p=0.03) subgroup in exercise group significantly increased. While no significant changes occurred in control group. Mean difference comparison between control and exercise groups indicated significant differences in 6MWT distances (p=0.01), SF-36 pain (p=0.00), physical role (p=0.02) subgroups and the values were higher in exercise group.Conclusions: Evidences provided from this study suggest that 6 weeks, a frequency of twice per week, respiratory and callisthenic exercises can lead to improvements in elderly participants who complain dyspnea and exercise intolerance.
