The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is a medical research study that enrolled 6814 adults over the age of 45 years in the USA [1, 2]. Participants were free of clinical cardiovascular disease and their clinical, functional, biological, genetic and imaging data were prospectively collected. The MESA study has resulted in numerous publications aimed at characterising subclinical cardiovascular disease and risk factors that predict progression to clinically overt cardiovascular disease. The MESA study was split into several ancillary studies in the area of respiratory diseases, including MESA Lung, MESA Air Pollution, MESA Sleep and MESA COVID-19 [1].

McGroder and co-workers estimate the incidence of interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) on non-contrast cardiac CT in the MESA study cohort and suggest that increased value of the percentage of high attenuation areas (%HAA) could precede occurrence of ILA https://bit.ly/42yE96Q
