Heraclitus, the Greek, pre-Socratic philosopher (figure 1), believed the world was ultimately made of fire, a metaphor for change. He wrote five centuries BC: panta rhei (Πάντα ῥεῖ, “everything flows”), exemplifying it with his quote: “No man ever steps in the same river twice.”
