Abstract
Background: Interstitial lung disease in children (chILD) are severe disorders that often require multiple treatments that burden the patient but also his family’s quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study was to validate a specific questionnaire assessing QoL issues of parents of chILD’s parents.
Methods: Parents were recruited within the reference center RespiRare. The validation of the questionnaire (chILD-PQ) needed two steps: (i) evaluation of the internal coherence of the scale and (ii) assessment of the chILD-PQ correlations with a validated family impact questionnaire (FI-PedsQL) and the the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS). This two-step process allowed to assess ChILD-PQ sensitivity to QoL and to mood issues
Results: A total of 59 parents of patients with chILD were included (17 fathers and 42 mothers). FI-PedsQL scores showed an altered QoL compared to parents of children with other chronic diseases. HADS scores revealed high levels of anxiety and depression. Cronbach’s alpha scores of the chILD-PQ were higher than 0.7, indicating a reliable scale. Each dimension of the chILD-PQ was correlated with the FI-PedsQL and with the HADS, revealing a good sensitivity to QoL and to mood issues.
Conclusions: The chILD-PQ is a reliable questionnaire that is now validated in French language to assess QoL and mood issues of parents of children with chILD. Such specific scale could help to detect parents in a critical psychologic situation, to provide adequate support and to monitor its efficacy. A better care for parents’ QoL is a crucial issue in chILD management.
