Abstract
Background: Central aortic blood pressure (CABP) and arterial stiffness parameters are better predictors of cardiovascular events as compared with brachial cuff pressure. Patients with Obstructive airway diseases like Chronic Obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD ) and bronchial asthma both have a high risk for cardiovascular events.
Aim: To assess the CABP indices, pulse wave velocity, and other indicators of arterial stiffness in Indian patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and Bronchial asthma
Methods: This is cross-sectional, single-center study. CABP indices, vascular age, arterial stiffness, and central Hemodynamics were measured in patients with COPD and Asthma using the Non-invasive Agedio B900 device (IEM, Stolberg, Germany).
Result: Total 198 patients of obstructive airway disease in which 81 were COPD and 112 were partially controlled bronchial asthma. The proportion of male patients were higher in both groups (61.7% & 61.6% respectively). The Pulse wave velocity(PWV) was significantly higher in patients with COPD compared to the group of patients with bronchial asthma (9.53+ 8.26 vs.7.55+ 1.7;p=.014 respectively). The augmentation index (AI) and augmentation pressure (AP) was also significantly higher in COPD group than patient with bronchial asthma( 0.31+ 0.15 vs.0.27+ 0.13; p=.04. & 10.69+ 8.91 vs.8.09+ 5.77p=.015 respectively). The mean vascular age was significantly higher in patients with COPD(58.41 + 11.81 vs 51.01+ 15.08,p=<.001)
Conclusion: PWV, AI and AP were higher in stable COPD without any cardiac comorbidities compared to Bronchial Asthma.
