Abstract

Introduction: To date there is limited data regarding SARS-COV-2 prognostic factors. Smoking has been assumed to be associated with an unfavorable outcome. The objective of this study is to assess whether there is a relationship between tobacco and evolution of COVID disease.

Methodology: Retrospective descriptive study of tobacco use in all patients admitted for COVID-19 between March 8th to May 1st 2020, in a third-level hospital. Epidemiological, demographic and clinical data were analysed.

Results: 392 patients were included. The characteristics of the patients are shown in Table 1. There were no significant differences in comorbidities between tobacco groups. The smoking habit was recorded in the history of 342 patients. The relationship of tobacco with the evolution of the disease is shown in Table 2. Smoking increases the possibility of ICU by 1.76 and the risk of death by 1.55.

Conclusion: A significant greater number of ICU admissions, longer mean stay and increase in deaths were observed among patients who smoke or were ex-smokers than those who never smoked. It is necessary to raise social awareness about the worse evolution of COVID-19 due to smoking.
