Abstract
Introduction: The evidence for the benefits of PR is unequivocal but no PR is available for patients with PTBLD in Kyrgyzstan. Before PR can be developed it is pivotal to understand the potential challenges and how to overcome them.
Aims: Explore views of potential PR referrers regards the development of PR for people living with PTBLD.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with potential referrers to PR in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis.
Results: 10 participants (7 TB Specialists, 3 Pulmonologists) were interviewed. The thematic analysis resulted in six main themes (see figure). Participants were positive about PR. They noted some challenges to providing PR to this group, not least the stigma experienced by patients in everyday life. A range of potential PR components were discussed including culturally and demographically appropriate physical activities (e.g. volleyball, rhythmic movements), psychological support (e.g. to tackle stigma) and educational materials (e.g. interactive group sessions). An individual approach to referral (e.g. encouraging attendance) and delivery (e.g. tailoring components to demographics) were highlighted.
Conclusions: Results demonstrate the perceived importance of implementing PR for patients with PTBLD in Kyrgyzstan, and the primary considerations for implementation, with implications for other low-resource settings.
