Abstract
Introduction: Different questionnaires have been developed to evaluate alteration in quality of life (Qol) among lung cancer patients. The aim of the study was to assess their Qol according to EQ-5D-3L questionnaire.
Methods: The EQ-5D-3L questionnaire consists of a descriptive system which comprises 5 dimensions: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain /discomfort and anxiety/depression. Each dimension has 3 levels: 1 (no problems), 2 (some problems) and 3(extreme problems). The patient indicates his self-rated health state according to a visual analogue scale from 0 (worst imaginable health state) to 100 (best imaginable health state).
Results: 100 patients were enrolled in the study with a mean age of 59 ± 9. Most were men (90%) with stage IV (54%), IIIB (23%). The predominant type was adenocarcinoma 49%. Mean Health state score according to the visual analogue scale of EQ-5D-3L questionnaire was 56.7±26.6. Problems in mobility were noted in 84% of patients,79% with problems in usual activities, 75% expressed Pain/discomfort, 61% anxiety/depression and 39% selfcare problems. There was a negative correlation between severity of problems and the Health State score, especially for usual activities and anxiety/depression problems (Pearson correlation = -0.527 and -0.520 respectively).
Conclusion: EQ-5D-3L is a useful measure to assess alteration in Qol among lung cancer patients. It demonstrated a significant impact on physical and psychological functioning. An active rehabilitation in palliative care is needed.
