Abstract
Introduction: Women’s awareness concerning asthma during pregnancy is important for good management, safe delivery and newborn health. Unfortunately, little is known about asthma awareness of women in childbearing age, and factors which may influence their knowledge.
Methods: A survey containing 36 questions assessing asthma knowledge based on current Polish Respiratory Society and Polish Gynecological Society guidelines was distributed on popular internet forums: the motherhood forum, the pregnant women forum, the asthma forum, the medical and non-medical student’s forum. Out of 115 responses: 56% were collected form females 18-24yo., 42% were given by non-medical students or graduates, 31.9% of respondents were asthmatics and 33.6% were ever pregnant.
Results: Although 92 % of survey respondents were aware that before pregnancy asthmatics have indications for pneumonological and gynecological consultation, the general knowledge concerning asthma was poor. 34% respondents gave correct answers concerning asthma control during pregnancy, 28% indicated that inhaled steroids may be used during pregnancy or breast-feeding (19%). 38% were aware about indication for seasonal flue vaccination. Generally medical or non-medical education, asthma presence or materiality status did not influenced respondents knowledge (p>0.05). However non-medical asthmatics had better knowledge about steroid therapy in pregnancy than non-asthmatic with medical education (OR 19.50, 95% CI 2.11-179.91, p=0.008) or asthmatics with medical education (OR 3.40, 95% CI 1.15-10.03 p=0.02).
Conclusions: Young woman have generally poor knowledge concerning asthma and pregnancy. Non-medical asthmatics seem to have the best knowledge on asthma treatment.
