Abstract
Background: 93 million patients suffer and 1 million die from OADs in India. Doctors don't have sufficient time to offer quality healthcare to patients. Trained allied health professionals (AHP) play important role in assisting doctors to manage OADs. Existing clinic staff and staff trained by pharmaceuticals placed in clinics seldom receive formal training. We started a 2 days training program for AHPs on OADs that includes extensive lectures and hands-on sessions. This study was done to assess the impact of our training program, a Certificate Course on Obstructive Airways Diseases (CORD) on the level of knowledge about OADs.
Method: 433 AHPs working in doctor’s clinics from across India, who attended 9 CORD programs were invited to participate and then were evaluated about their OAD knowledge. A pre-post program test was designed to capture the existing and later change in knowledge of participants in Asthma, COPD, Spirometry, Peakflow metry, Inhalers, and Counseling. Data was entered in Epi info and simple descriptive analysis was done using IBM SPSS Ver. 23.0.
Results: 385 participants (110 doctor's staff and 275 staff trained by Pharmaceuticals) consented and completed the evaluation
Conclusion: CORD Training significantly improved level of OAD knowledge in participants. This module should be incorporated on a large scale to improve the quality of care of OAD patients.
