Abstract
Aim: to detect the impact of non CF bronchiectasis on health-related quality of life and evaluate its relationship with psychological status and disease severity indexes such as BSI and FACED
Method: 90(M/F =37/53, median age 45 stable non-CF bronchiectatic adult patients were enrolled into the study. Patients underwent lug function tests and dyspnea scores (mMRC), number of exacerbations and hospital admissions, BSI and FACED were assessed. Health related quality of life (Turkish version of SF-36) scale and HAD (hospital anxiety and depression)scale were administered
Result: anxiety was diagnosed in 31 and depression in 41 of patients. Female patients had higer rates of anxiety (41% vs 24%, p:0.091) and depression (59% vs 27%, p:0.003)than male patients. Patients with depression are more likely to have lower quality of life scores than nondepressed patients, 57.6 vs 65.7, p:0.012, respevtively. All of our non CF bronchiectatic patients had lower points of SF36 scores than Turkish population based normals. Patients got the lowest point in physical role subscale and highest point in pain subscale of SF36 life quality index. All domains of life quality scres except pain, role limitations due to emotional problems and mental health are statistically lower in patients with intermediate-high BSI and FACED severity scores when compared with patients with mild severity scores. Total SF36 score was 67.3 in patients with mild Faced score and 52.7 in patients with moderate-high Faced score (p:0.001).
Conclusion: Prevalence of depression is higher in female patients with non CF bronchiectasis than male patients and is assosiated with worse life quality scores
