Abstract
Objective: descriptive analysis of data of patients who underwent medical Thoracoscopy
Methodology: A retrospective descriptive study,Electronic database and patients' clinical notes were reviewed.Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 statistical software package.
Results: Out of total number of 97 subjects ,42 (43.3%) patients had Tuberculosis, 18 (28.9%) had malignancy,23 patients had the diagnosis of acute or chronic inflammation and 3 had empyema and 1 patient had endometriosis.Out of 28 patients who had malignancies conformed by thoracoscopic biopsy, only two patients (7.1%) had positive cytology Report for malignant cells.ESR had no statistical significance in any of the above disease categories but high ADA levels had statistically significant correlation with Tuberculosis with mean value of 61 U/L. In malignant conditions, it was significantly low with mean value of 20 U/L. 88 had lymphocytic effusions.Fourty- two (47.7%) had Tuberculosis, 25 (28.4%) had malignancy and 21 (23.9%) included in the “other” category. 36 (37.1%) patients had abnormal pleural nodules. Out of them 33 (91.7%) had the Histological diagnosis of Tuberculosis or malignancy.
Conclusion: Medical Thoracoscopy and Biopsy is more superior to the other methods in diagnosing pleural diseases. High level of ADA has statistically significant association with Tuberculosis and ESR had no statistically significant association with any of the above disease categories.
