Abstract
Objective: To determine hospital outcome of Patients following hospitalization with acute exacerbation of COPD with and without cardiovascular (CV) risk factors.
Methods: It was a Cross- sectional study, conducted at Pulmonology Department, Khyber teaching hospital Peshawar among patients admitted with AECOPD and their CV risk factors were identified. Those with heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, chronic kidney disease, Post Tuberculosis sequelae, respiratory failure or Pneumonia were excluded. All patients outcome in terms of length of hospital stay, any arrhythmia or acute coronary syndrome were documented at the time of discharge.
Results: Out of 700 patients, who admitted with acute exacerbation of COPD, 434 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Mean age of the study sample was 61.6 ± 12.4 (95%CI: 60.4-62.6), with 41 % male. However, those 13% with all 4 risk factors, mean length of stay was 7.3 ± 4 days , 4% died during admission.
Conclusion: AECOPD patients, with CV risk factors has prolonged length of hospital stay as compared to those without CV risk factors.
