Abstract

Smoking is an important risk factor for various diseases and considered one of the most important public health problems. However, asymptomatic smokers does not consider themselves sick. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of cigarette smoking on haematological, biochemical and physiological parameters related to lung function in smokers with a smoking history ≥ 10 pack- years. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 20 smokers (mean age 39.2 ± 11.17 years) and 26 healthy individuals never-smokers / controls (mean age 36.0 ± 4.13 years). Peripheral blood were collected and processed for analysis of total cholesterol, glucose, PCR, HDL, LDL, basal insulin, triglycerides, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, leucogram, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes. Respiratory function was analyzed by COex levels, PEF, FEV1, FVC and the relationship between FEV1 / FVC. Significant differences were observed between COex (8,6±3,52 vs 2,5±1,42; p <0,001), PEF (410,5±91,10 vs 507,6±129,25; p<0,006) e FVC (3,42 ± 0,76 vs 4,5±1,01; p<0,005), HDL (48,3±9,25 vs 59,1±15,17, p<0,004) and levels of leucogram (7,2±1,97 vs 6,0±1,25, p<0,02) of smokers compared to non-smokers. Our results reinforce that smoking promotes pulmonary and systemic manisfestations even in asymptomatic subjects. Thus, these changes must be known by the smokers and may help to prevent smoking initiation and promote smoking cessation in younger age.
