Abstract

Smoking susceptible adolescents has been recognized as future regular smoking adults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of susceptibility to smoke among adolescents and also to identify the determinants of smoking consumption. Data was obtain from a cross-sectional study in 2013 by applying to adolescents anonymous questionnaires containing demographic characteristics, use of tobacco, attitudes of family and friends regarding smoking consumption. Study population were adolescents from 3 high-schools, aged between 15-17 years. From 141 adolescents, those who were males (OR=1.21), who received money from parents more than 10 euro/day (OR=1.32), whose parents (OR=1.66) or friends smoked (OR=2.02) were more likely to be susceptible to cigarette consumption. Adolescents who received money from parents less than 2 euro/day (OR=0.32),who had access to anti-tobacco media (OR=0.82), and had knowledges about side effects of smoking consumption (OR=0.55) were less susceptible to smoking consumption. Males adolescents who had smoking parents and smoking friends, who received money from parents and had acces to tobacco marketing were determinants in smoking consumption among adolescents from Transylvania region. Anti-tobacco media has a protective role against susceptibility to smoking among adolescents.Efforts to prevent adolescents smoking should be designed and should include all forms of tobacco control.
