Abstract
The social role has been studied in children with cancer and chronic kidney disease but not in chronic respiratory disease (CRD). Objective: To identify aspects affecting the social role of children with CRD from their own perception and their caregivers. Phenomenological designed qualitative study with structured interviews and saturated sampling were carried. The study use 3 key informants (I) 6-18 years old, and 3 General informants (GI) -from patients belonging to a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
Outcomes coded in 5 categories:
Limitations of the disease: In this category, changes in skills performance and attitudes towards play became evident. Role in the community: Family environment changes were founded.
Emotional component: The (I) described theirselves as happy but (GI) referred episodes of depression and introverted personality. Economic component: Caregivers perceive greater impact in this area than the children.
Projection of life: Children want to be professionals and rise a family.
Conclusion: Perception of those who have the disease differs from their caregivers; CRD affects the family and school interaction: for (I) the most vulnerable role is related to the school. On the other hand, the economic implications to the (GI) during the confrontation of pathology became a major concern.
