Abstract

Aims And Objectives: 1.Determining nocturnal desaturation and daytime oxygen saturation levels.2.Correlating nocturnal desaturation with Severity of COPD,BMI,Pulmonary artery pressure and BODE Index.3.Identifying any predictors.

Material And Methods: Fifty stable COPD patients underwent 6 hours of saturation recording during night and 1 hour of oxygen saturation recording during day.Spirometry,Echocardiography,6 Minute Walk Test and Epworth Sleepiness Scale Test were performed.

Results: In this study,58% patients had nocturnal desaturation.Nocturnal desaturation had significant correlation with the severity of COPD, daytime hypoxemia, Pulmonary artery systolic pressure and BMI.All patients with severe and very severe COPD and all patients with pulmonary artery systolic pressure more than 40 mm Hg were nocturnal desaturators.

Conclusion: 1.Severity of COPD,daytime hypoxemia, pulmonary artery systolic pressure are good predictors of nocturnal desaturation in COPD patients.2.OSA Screening suggested in all moderate to severe COPD patients due to higher likelihood of desaturation.3.Nocturnal supplemental oxygen,to delay the progression of pulmonary hypertension should be studied.
