Abstract
Objective: To assess the treatment outcomes of multi-drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients treated at Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases (OICD), a tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan.
Methods: We reviewed the records of 919 cases of MDR pulmonary tuberculosis patients registered from January 2010 to December 2014. All patients received treatment and followed as per WHO guideline. The results were analyzed as per who guideline.
Results: A total of 919 patients were enrolled. Out of which 783 (85.20%) patients were MDR TB patients. The outcome of MDR TB patients treated were as follow: 324(41.37%) patients were cured, 10 (1.27%) completed the treatment, 75 (9.57%) died, 87(11.11%) lost to follow up, 262 (33.46%) still under treatment, 08 (1%) were transferred out to other treating facility and 5 (0.63%) patients outcome was not reported because 04 died before start of treatment and one improved on cat-II.
Conclusion: The cure rate in this study is low. Beside default rate is high which is a great challenge in the management of MDR tuberculosis. Appropriate measures are needed to decrease the default rate.
