Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To provide a structured group based exercises protocol to improve physical, mental and social status of community dwelling elderly. We used the International Classification of Functioning to understand if the device guided group based exercises was a barrier or facilitator in creating opportunity for promoting community life.
METHODS: The group of elders belonging to Varishtha Nagrik Kendra Sansthan, New Delhi, India was chosen to participate in the study. A randomized, observational study was conducted over a period of 8 weeks to evaluate the effect of group breathing exercises using Smart Breathe Device in community dwelling elderly on Community life and QOL. Respiratory functions and QOL changes were studied in 32 elders.
RESULTS: The study group showed improvement in physical, emotional and mental health in elderly subjects. The study showed that group breathing exercises motivated elders to participate in community activities. Positive changes were noted in cardiovascular and respiratory systems in subjects who participated regularly in group exercises. Subjects reported better appetite, sleep and were more comfortable in moving in and around his/her house.
CONCLUSIONS: This pilot investigation demonstrates that group based breathing exercise with Smart Breathe Device in community dwelling elderly is feasible and results in an improvement in community life and therefore improved quality of life.
