Read the ERS clinical practice guidelines for high-flow nasal cannula in acute respiratory failure here

  • Lrig1 expression restricts lung squamous cell carcinoma growth
This study published in the ERJ shows that LRIG1 marks basal airway progenitor cells with high proliferative potential and regulates progression of pre-invasive squamous cell lung cancer.
  • CFTR modulator treatment reverses aberrant mucus properties via hydration
This ERJ study of CFTR modulator treatment of cystic fibrosis airway cells shows that extended rehydration, not pH adjustment, facilitates mucus removal from cell surfaces. This suggests mucus hydration is the dominant biochemical change in CF airways.
  • Artificial intelligence for quantifying lung changes on computed tomography
Artificial intelligence allows a fully automated volumetric scoring of lung structural abnormalities in cystic fibrosis using CT. This study shows it could be used as a robust quantitative outcome to assess disease changes in the era of CFTR modulators.
