2022, Respiratory Physiology and NeurobiologyCitation Excerpt :OSAS manifests as recurrent pharyngeal collapse that occurs during sleep, resulting in intermittent hypoxia (IH) and excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (Young et al., 1993). The periodic hypoxia/reoxygenation sequence, which is a defining feature of OSAS, is a chronic pattern that occurs as a consequence of oxidative stress imbalance, along with majority of adverse cardiovascular and respiratory events (Hla et al., 1994; Hung et al., 1990). Increased oxidative stress markers, such as pentane (Olopade et al., 1997) and 8-isoprostane (Carpagnano et al., 2002), have been found in the exhaled breath condensate of OSAS patients.
