Stimulation of sensory nerves in the airway epithelium releases tachykinins including substance P and neurokinins A and B.15,16,17,18,19 These tachykinins cause the chemotaxis and adhesion of neutrophils,20,21 stimulate the release of cytokines, and cause the degranulation of eosinophils.22,23 In animal studies, exposure to cigarette smoke and other irritants promotes neutrophils to appear promptly in the airways.
