It sometimes results from inhaled or oral medications used for airway disease management. Development of osteoporosis and its complication such as fracture in patients with COPD cause poor quality of life and even mortality. It becomes a big burden in society. We designed this study to investigate risk factors of osteoporosis in patients with COPD.MethodsWe used the data from the 2008-2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Subjects who aged 40 or more and performed pulmonary function test appropriately and BMD were included in this study.ResultTotal 6192 subjects were enrolled in this study. Among them, 782 were COPD patients. When comparing the frequency, COPD patients showed higher ratio of osteoporosis (T-score ≤-2.5) than non-COPD group (15.4 vs 11.5%, p<0.0001). Of 782 COPD patients, 127 patients have osteoporosis. Analysis comparing mean or frequency of parameters between osteoporosis and non-osteoporosis group performed and several variables; age, sex, education, obesity, smoking status, alcohol drinking amount, exercise, hypertension, arthritis, anemia, vitamin D concentration, FVC and FEV1 were selected for multiple logistic regression model. Women (OR 8.0, 95% CI 2.7-21.5), old age ≥65 (OR 3.9, 95% CI 1.7-9.0), lower BMI (<18.5 vs 18.5-25 OR 9.7, 95% CI 3.1-29.3), lack of moderate exercise (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.1-6.3), anemia (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.1-6.1) were associated factors with osteoporosis. Ever-smokers (OR 2.2, 95% CI 0.98-5.0, p=0.057) showed trend toward osteoporosis.ConclusionBesides age and sex, low BMI, lack of exercise, and anemia were risk factors for osteoporosis in patients with COPD.
