Anaemia occurs in 13 to 17% of COPD patients and it may have deleterious effects on COPD. The present study was undertaken to study the osteoporosis and anaemia in the elderly COPD patients. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out among COPD patients. Patients with related comorbidities and on oral corticosteroids were excluded. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the lumbar spine were performed using bone densitometer. Routine hemogram were recorded. Risk factors were identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: Out of 60 COPD patients, 49(81.6%) had osteoporosis and 8 (13.3%) had osteopenia. Anaemia was present in 11 (18%) patients. Hematocrit (anaemia) was positively correlated with BMD (osteoporosis) (R=0.3, p< 0.001). Stage of COPD (FEV1 values) was positively correlated with the severity of osteoporosis. Patients with lower body mass index (BMI) had higher prevalence of osteoporosis and anaemia. Using multivariate regression analysis, COPD and anaemia were independent risk factors for osteoporosis. Conclusions: Most of the osteoporosis and anaemia patients belong to advanced stages of COPD. Larger study is required to understand the progression of Osteoporosis and Anemia in COPD, which can be a clue for further research in understanding the pathogenesis and management of COPD.
