Male volunteers aged 50-60 (n=31) without any chronic pathologies took part in the trial. Patients exhaled a hypoxic breathing mixture (hypoxicator “Everest”, Russia) containing 15-13-10% O2 daily during 30 days 6 times a week. Every treatment session contained 5 cycles of breathing a Hypoxic Gas Mixture (HGM) which lasted 5 minutes with 5 minutes intervals (20,8% O2). During the course of HGM breathing we estimated oxygen cost O2 (VO2) and carbon deposition (VCO2), airway conductance (MEF 25-75), blood gas composition (Hb, SaO2, CaO2), circulating blood volume per minute (Q). We calculated O2transfer rate by arterial (qaO2) and venous blood (qvO2), coefficient of oxygen uptake by tissues (KUO2), and physical efficiency (test PWC150).It has been found out that the course of HGM breathing leads to increase in airway conductance of both large and middle bronchi and bronchial tubes. It is also accompanied by 11.1% increase in hemoglobin and 8.1% increase in degree of oxygen in arterial blood. There is 19.7% increase in qaO2 improves oxygen delivery to organs and tissues. At muscular rest VO2 increases and carbohydrate metabolism (RQ=1.01) becomes more intense. Oxygen uptake at the tissue level is up by 5.3%, which proves the formation of tissue adaptive mechanisms. Physical efficiency (RWC150) is up by 6.4%.Thus, intermittent hypoxia is an effective means to improve external respiration, supply of oxygen to tissues, tissue respiration and physical efficacy at elderly patients.
