The prevalence was estimated at more than 20% during the OlympicWinter Games.Military can be considered as elite athletes who can be exposed to extreme weather conditions, often with the presence of environmental irritating agents. However, there is no study assessing the prevalence of EIB in the French Army. Methods : We conducted a cross-sectional study whose main objective was to assess the prevalence of EIB in a population of young recruits of the French navy. After answering a questionnaire, the subjects performed a stress test, consisted of a race track at least 8 minutes, with acceleration every minute. The FEV1 was measured before the test and at 1, 5, 10, and 15 minutes after the test with a portable spirometer. The test was considered positive if the FEV1 dropped more than 10%. The number of subjects needed to assess the prevalence with a 95 percent confidence interval of +/- 0.08 was 96. This study was approved by the ethical committee of our institution. Results :101 subjects participated in the study. The prevalence of EIB was 38.6% [29.1 - 48.8]. The proportion of subjects with a history of asthma was increased in subjects with EIB (64.3% vs.34.5%, p = 0.04). Age,sex,BMI, level of physical activity does not appear to influence the risk of EIB. There is a trend towards an increased risk of EIB in smokers(48.7% vs 30.6% p =0.09).Conclusion: The prevalence of EIB appears to be high among young recruits in the French navy. The history of asthma appears to be the main contributing factor, as in previous studies. We should now study the impactof BIE onthe operational capacity.
