Aims and objectives: The aims of our study were to assess the relationship between OSAand CRP levels and to test the hypothesis that the atherogenic effects of smoking are additive in OSA patients, comparing to a control group. Methods: Two Romanian groups, consisting of 40 patients diagnosed with OSA and 26 healthy controls, were recruited. All subjects underwent cardiorespiratory poligraphy. Plasma CRP, endothelin-1 (ET1), homocysteine (Hcy), lipd profile, glycemia and albumin levels were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman correlations tests, two tailed t-test and one-way ANOVA test. Results: The mean values of CRP were statistically significant higher in smokers than in nonsmokers (p=0.003). In OSA group, correlations were found as follows between CRP-very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL) (r=-0.30;p=0.05); CRP-Hcy/body mass index (BMI) (r=0.46;p=0.002) and in OSA group smokers, between CRP-oxygen desaturation index (ODI) (r=-0.64;p=0.001); CRP-BMI (r=-0.57;p=0.005), while in the control group between CRP-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc) (r=-0.56;p=0.002); ET1-VLDL (r=-0.44;p=0.02). Conclusions: In OSA patients, CRP increase the predictive value of lipid and nonlipid risk factors and may be a predictor for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.Key words: sleep apnea, C-Reactive Protein, blood lipids, smoking, atherosclerosis.}, issn = {0903-1936}, URL = {https://erj.ersjournals.com/content/44/Suppl_58/P2250}, eprint = {https://erj.ersjournals.com/content}, journal = {European Respiratory Journal} }
