If the hematocrit (HCT) increase was due to intermittent nocturnal hypoxia, it would be interesting to analyze whether CPAP treatment produces a decrease in HCT, translating a correction of hypoxic events.Material and Methods : 20 patients referred from the hematology unit for respiratory sleep disorders evaluated during 2012-2013 . They did study with cardiorespiratory polygraphy. Those patients diagnosed with SAHS were treated with CPAP. After 6 months of treatment, underwent a blood test . Hemoglobin (HB) levels and HCT were compared before and after CPAP , using the Wilcoxon test for nonparametric variables. Results : All patients were male. The mean age was 64.5 (SD 13.6). 85% (17 ) patients were diagnosed with SAHS. The mean respiratory disturbance index ( RDI ) resulted 32.7 (SD 25.6 ) . The minimum was 0.7 and the maximum 81 . Half of the patients showed severe SAHS. The nocturnal oximetry profile presented with an average of 41 % T90 % (SD 35 ) and a middle desaturation index 34.4 / h ( SD 25 ) . A predominance of obstructive SAHS was observed. When comparing HB and HCT before and after treatment with CPAP , a reduction of both parameters was observed , with a significant differenceView this table:.Conclusion: Patients with SAHS and poliglobulia show an improvement in red cell parameters after treatment with CPAP. Studies with larger series are needed to verify these results.
