Objective: Evaluate the rate of smoking cessation among patients with respiratory (RD) or cardiac disease (CD) after 6 months of hospitalization. Methods: 63 patients with RD and 53 CD active smokers were evaluated during hospitalization according to gender, age, smoking history, Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence (FTND) and motivational stage. We assessed the smoking cessation after 6 months. During the hospitalization, all patients received individual motivational counseling and specific medications to control the symptoms of abstinence. After discharge, all patients were referred to continue the treatment at the intensive behavior counseling group once a week during for 1 month. Results: From the total, 62(53%) patients returned after 6 months. Characteristics are presented in the table.View this table:Conclusion: The RD group presented higher cessation rate than CD, however, the smoking cessation treatment during hospitalization showed effectiveness.
