We evaluted the social nicotine dependence in lung cancer patients with the Kano test for social nicotien dependence (KTSND).Methods: The Korean version of KTSND questionare was used in 180 lung cancer patients. The score ranges from 0 to 30, and the higher the score is, the more nicotine dependent. Initially the data was collected just after their diagnosis of lung cancer in 100 patients and evaluated by their smoking status. Thereafter in another 80 patients, we compared the changes of KTSND scores before and after the initial therapy. Results: The mean age of 180 responders was 65.8 years, and 68% were male. Current smokers, past smokers and never-smokers were 24%, 47% and 29% respectively. The average KTSND score of the 100 patients was 12.2 ± 5.7, the score of the current smoker was significantly higher than those of past smokers and never-smokers (13.8 ± 5.4 vs. 12.0 ± 5.5 and 10.5 ± 5.5 respectively, p < 0.001). The score was significantly decreased after treatment of lung cancer in 80 patients from 16.7 ± 4.7 to 8.9 ± 4.4 (p < 0.001), and the mean changes of current smokers and past smokers were significantly higher than never smokers (12.5 ± 3.4 and 13.0 ± 4.5 vs. 6.5 ± 3.5, p < 0.001)Conclusions: In this study, we observed that the KTSND questionnaire is a useful method to evaluate the psychosocial aspects of smoking depenence in patients with lung cancer and can be used as a valuable tool in the education of lung cancer patients and cancer prevention programs.
