This prospective population-based study was designed to determine if impaired lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)) is a risk factor for out-of-hospital SCD in the general male population.The study population was a representative sample of males living in the city of Kuopio, Finland and its surrounding rural communities, who were 49–67 years of age at baseline examinations performed between 1991 and 1993. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Kuopio (Kuopio, Finland) and each participant gave written informed consent.
