TY - JOUR T1 - Can pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) provide the patient's ability to better cope COPD? – A longitudinal design JF - European Respiratory Journal JO - Eur Respir J VL - 44 IS - Suppl 58 SP - P1306 AU - Karen Aurmo Y1 - 2014/09/01 UR - http://erj.ersjournals.com/content/44/Suppl_58/P1306.abstract N2 - Background: PR can help patients better cope with their own disease, thus contributing to improved health and quality of life. How the disease is managed, depends on the person's basic attitudes towards life in general and his/her amount of resources. The study purpose is to acquire knowledge about whether PR can change in coping ability in patients with COPD.Litterature: Antonovskys theory of salutogenesis and "Sense of coherence" (SOC) is used as coping theory.Method: Participants (n=66) answered the instruments SOC-13 (Sense of Coherence Questionnaire –13) at course start and 6 months after PR was completed. PR included of both day-based and outpatient with COPD. There were no exclusion criteria. Results: In all OAS three core concepts “understanding”, “manageability” and “meaning”, the participants had statistically, significant positive changes in the core concept “understanding” (p = 0.004) 6 months after PR.Conclusion: For the patients to "saltugenetically" understand, cognitively, structurally coherently and clear, the different stimuli encountered in life, the core concept "understanding" is the most important concept in the rehabilitation process. Keywords: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary rehabilitation and "sense of coherence".
