Materials. For three years period 137 patients with COPD were trained by medical specialists in pulmonology and functional diagnostic. The principle of patient education was based on the experience of asthma school, which has existed for over 10 years. This approach was not entirely appropriate for patients with COPD, given the even lower adherence to basic therapy, the presence of severe, often undiagnosed comorbidity (psychosomatic disorders, diseases of the cardiovascular system and other diseases). At the beginning of our work, we organize visiting schools for patients with COPD. There were 14 visits. Also screening programs were conducted to identify patients with impaired respiratory function (evaluation of patients at risk). Only 13.7% were receiving standard treatment before training, the rest used treatment on demand. After 2 years of study the percentage of patients receiving standard treatment increased to 40%. The number of visits to a doctor has significantly reduced, adherence to inhalation therapy increased from 27% to 54%, the use of nebulizer therapy in exacerbations increased from 0 to 40%. Our three years experience showed that mixed forms of training should be carried out in patients with COPD: introduction of lectures and classrooms for group training or at factories, demonstration of videos, phone contacts, and filling out questionnaires. Conclusions: 3 year experience of working with patients with COPD increased treatment adherence by 27%. There is need to search for new forms of learning and development of rehabilitation programs for these patients. ER -
