Fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is one of the useful markers of eosinophilic airway inflammation in asthmatic patients.Objective: The aim of this study was to examine whether FeNO level is associated with atopic profiles in terms of mono-sensitization and poly-sensitization in asthmatic patients.Patients and methods: There is a prospective study including 37 asthmatic patients followed up outside of an exacerbation. A clinical protocol was followed with an assessment that included FeNO measurements, spirometry and skin prick testing to common aeroallergens.Results: There were 19 males and 18 females with a mean age of 39.7 years. Thirteen patients were non-sensitized, 11 were mono-sensitized, and 13 were poly-sensitized. Eighteen patients (48.6%) were allergic to house dust mites, 10 (27%) were allergic to animal dander, 8 (21.6%) were allergic to pollens and 2 (5.4%) were allergic to cockroach. The average value of FeNO was 38.8 ppb. The FeNO level was different between the 3 groups: non-sensitized= 32.4 ppb, mono-sensitized= 38.6 ppb and poly-sensitized= 45.4 ppb. The difference between the 3 groups wasn’t statistically significant.Conclusion: This study shows that the FeNO levels were different according to the profile of atopy. These results suggest that strongly sensitized asthmatic patients may have a highest risk of airway inflammation. ER -
