Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate if psychiatric symptom scanning test(PSST) results differ according to gender among smokers who applied to smoking cessation clinics(SCC).
Method: Demographic attributes, smoking qualities, and SCL90r PSST results of adult smokers who applied to SCC at a university hospital were collected.Smokers with and without psychiatric symptoms were evaluated by univariate analysis and logistic regression analysis.
Results: Among total of 421 smokers applied to the clinic between October 2011–March 2012; 107 smokers were excluded because of missing data.169 of 314 smokers enrolled in the study were male. The mean age was 41.2±10.9(17-78).47.4% had education at secondary school level and below. While the mean package-year of smokers was 27.7±17.7(1-120), average number of cigarettes smoked per day was 23.5±9.3(2-60), and average score of Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence(FTND) was 6.6±2.1(0-11).General psychiatric symptom(GPS) positivity with SCL90 PSST were exist in 41.4% of smokers. It was found to be greater in women smokers, in those with high nicotine dependence and those with education less than 8 years (p=0.001; p=0.003; p=0.04).In logistic regression analysis, being “female” was found to be an independent predictor for the presence of GPS.GPS in male smokers with high nicotine dependence were found to be higher proportion (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Particularly female smokers and male smokers with high dependence are recommended to perform screening for psychiatric symptoms before smoking cessation attempt. Smokers with psychiatric symptoms can be evaluated by psychiatrists and their advices can increase the success of cessation attempts.
