ERS aims to provide authors with the highest quality support, from submission through to post-publication. Our focus is on delivering a stress-free experience at all stages of manuscript workflow. We offer a number of services to assist you and your colleagues at every stage of the publishing process.
Submission and peer review
ERS uses the ScholarOne platform to handle all manuscripts from submission to acceptance. ScholarOne is a user-friendly system used by authors, editors and editorial staff, and boasts over 13 million users across 5,000 different publications.
Using ScholarOne, our authors are able to submit their manuscripts for consideration to each of our journals: the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ), the European Respiratory Review (ERR), Breathe and ERJ Open Research (ERJOR). The system is also used for commissioning chapters for new ERS books, allowing clear, trackable communication with editors.
The submission process for original and revised manuscripts is simple and concise, allowing for easy upload of manuscript files, cover letters and reviewer responses. Authors are not required to create separate accounts for different ERS journals – a real plus in this age of multiple accounts and passwords to remember! Our submission sites also provide support for ORCID and FundRef, and ERS publications staff are available by email and telephone to assist with any queries during the submission process.
Finally, ERS supports transfers between several of its journals, so an unsuccessful submission may still be transferred to a different ERS journal, provided the option is offered by the editor. Transfers of this nature provide authors with further opportunities to publish their material with ERS.

Manuscripts accepted for publication in any of the ERS publications receive the benefits of our high-level editing and production processes:
Copyediting and proofreading
Our team of experienced technical editors provide a thorough and extensive copyediting and proofreading service from our Publications Office.
Our skilled production team will redraw figures wherever required, helping our authors to illustrate their content with clear, vivid figure artwork.
All authors are sent proofs of their manuscript, allowing them to preview the publication-ready version of their manuscript and request any changes required.
Publication and beyond
Should your manuscript be accepted for publication, you can benefit from ERS’s many post-publication services.
The ERS publications offer a range of open access options.
ERJ authors can opt to make their article open access through the ERJ Open scheme, an author-pays service in which articles are published online under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial Licence 4.0 ('CC-BY-NC') and made free to view on the ERJ website, as well as being deposited in PubMed Central.
All content in the ERR and Breathe is free to access online. All articles are published under the CC-BY-NC licence.
Full details regarding open access, public archiving and funder mandates can be found on the individual journals’ websites, in the author instructions.
The ERJ publishes most Original, Review and Letter manuscripts ahead of print, via the ERJ In Press service. This allows for rapid online publication, with some manuscripts typeset and online within as little as 3 weeks from acceptance, increasing the immediacy of your work.
ERJ Open Research operates a continuous-publication model, with manuscripts published online only. This minimises time in production, allowing your work to be available online sooner.

ERS has recently partnered with Kudos, providing authors with powerful tools with which to enhance and enrich their published content.
Kudos is a free service through which you can broaden readership and increase the impact of your research by putting your work in a broader context.
Kudos also provides a one-stop shop for multiple metrics relating to your publications: page views, citations, full-text downloads and article-level metrics.
A brief overview of Kudos can be seen in the following video:
